Watusi is the original Worldbeat / Reggae group in Texas and one of the pioneers of the genre since 1983. Premier artists on World Beatnik Records, this band is a 10 piece tribe of players from the Caribbean, Afrika and Americas, with the "Skankin Horns", fire and dancers in the big show, a festival headliner for many years. This band was the vision of founder Jimi Watusi, leader, producer, writer, keyboardist and lead vocalist.
After meeting and mentoring by the great Peter Tosh, Jimi began the first known reggae group in Texas, called Bali, in 1976 in Denton, TX, then was invited by Tosh to Jamaica in 1981, where he soaked up the Rasta kulcha for a year, and after a time in Nawlins, continuing the diverse music experience, he returned to Dallas to form Watusi in 1983 with a drummer from Rwanda in the Tutsi tribe, Ruta Gengwa.
30 years later, Watusi has released 6 albums, toured and lived from Hawaii to Brasil and now reside in Costa Rica, touring North, Central and South America, and soon to be in Cuba ! All on a mission of "Word, Sound, Power" with a mix of world riddims and a message of One Love....
