Martha
Garrett, violin, actively performs throughout
the Seattle area. In addition, she is principal second
violin with the Yakima Symphony Orchestra. She has
been a member of the Sylvan String Quartet since 1991
and teaches privately in Seattle. A native of the
Pacific Northwest, Ms. Garrett has studied with Margaret
Pressley, Serge Kardalian, and Charmian Gadd. After
receiving a B.A. in performance from Western Washington
University, Ms. Garrett went abroad to pursue additional
studies and performing opportunities. She attended
the N.W. German Music Academy in Detmold, Germany
where she studied with Lukas David and performed with
the Tibor Varga Chamber Orchestra. Her parents, after
many years of paying for lessons and musical equipment,
thank you for your patronage.
Marjorie Parkington,
cello, is a founding member of the Sylvan String Quartet
and a long-time Seattle resident. She currently teaches
at the Pacific Northwest School of Music, where she
is head of the cello department. Previously, she performed
with the Bellevue Philharmonic as principal and assistant
principal cello, and with Musicomedy, Village Theater,
and the Civic Light Opera. She studied music at the
University of Idaho and the University of Washington,
then continued her studies with Charles Brennand,
Carter Enyeart, and Cordelia Wikarske. Last but by
no means least, she is the proud grandmother of Ewen
Parkington.
Sarah Perlman, violin,
has lived and played in the Pacific Northwest since
1981. She freelances in orchestras and chamber ensembles
throughout the region. She also coaches chamber ensembles
with Seattle Conservatory of Music, and teaches private
lessons in Seattle. A versatile musician, Sarah has
played klezmer and pop music, performed with the Strauss
Trio, and knows a fiddle tune or two. Her education
included studies with Jens Ellerman at the Cincinnati
Conservatory's pre-college program, and with Marilyn
MacDonald at the Oberlin Conservatory. In Seattle,
Sarah has studied performance and pedagogy with Margaret
Pressley. She is thrilled to be a member of this quartet
and to be working with such accomplished and inventive
musicians.
Loreen Petty, viola, is the newest
member of the Sylvan String Quartet. She began her
musical studies on the violin, and while attending
Northwest Nazarene College, played with the Boise
Philharmonic Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. After
graduating to the viola, she studied with Eric Shumsky
at the University of Washington. She served as principal
violist with the Northwest Symphony Orchestra and
the Olympic Ballet Orchestra, and has performed with
many other local ensembles including the Bellevue
Philharmonic, Federal Way Philharmonic, Civic Light
Opera, Port Gardner Bay Chamber and Seattle Chamber
Orchestras. <
