Vocalist
Janet Rayor started gathering these songs as a teenager
and founded the group over 13 years later when no
other style of music could quite fill what this music
fulfills. Ruthie Dornfeld was referred for an early
recording and when a guitarist Rayor was working with
wasn't available, Ruthie suggested her three year
musical partner, John Miller. Laurie Andres was soon
referred by Ruthie and others, but being a busy musician,
Laurie soon needed a sub, and jazz pianist and Kletzmer
accordionist Steve Rice stepped into the gap.
Rouge has had the honor of having two tracks of La
Terre considered by the producers of Sex and the City,
but while fame passed Rouge for the moment, they've
opened major exhibits at LA's Red Cat Theatre of the
Walt Disney Concert Complex, Denver Art Museum, Portland
Art Museum, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle Art Museum,
Holter Art Museum in Helena, and MaryHill Art Museum
at the Columbia Gorge, and, in concert, have played
Benaroya Founders Hall, San Juan Theatre & Arts
Ctr., CenterStage Spokane, Mercer Island Music in
the Parks, Kenmore Concert Series, Juan de Fuca
Festival of Arts, Choochokam Arts Festival, Portland's
Viscount Ballroom, and the KBCS Stage at NW Folklife
Fes tival, as well as various levels of bohemian establishments!
Vocalist Janet Rayor has performed all over the USA
and Europe. She began singing solos at 9 and training
at 11, including work with Juilliard's Owen Brown.
She has been a dancer, actress, physical theatre choreographer
and, recently, had the good fortune of singing opera
as Papagena in Mozart's "Magic Flute" and
the witch in NOISE's "Hansel & Gretel."
She also sings jazz periodically with Ruby Slippers.
Like Piaf, she knows the immediacy of performing on
the street--though often as a 8"4' stilt-dancer!
Violinist Ruthie Dornfeld recently returned from
performances in France. For twenty years, she's played
thoughout the US, Europe, Russia, and Brazil as a
soloist & with groups including the American Cafe
Orchestra, Boston City Limits, and New York step dancer
Ira Bernstein. Her playing is informed by strong classical
training, jazz, and traditional fiddle styles ranging
from celtic to Eastern European. She appears on numerous
recordings and also plays original, Brazilian choros
and tango duos with musical partner John Miller (see
below) and Freshet including concerts in Finland and
Denmark.
Guitarist John Miller is a sought after live and
studio ensemble musician; he has played, composed
and recorded with the groups Catwalk, Rebecca Kilgore,
John Reischman, and virtuoso "New Grass"
instrumentalists Russ Barenberg and Tony Trischka.
An active composer and performer, John also teaches
in England and across the US, including stints at
the Pinewoods Music Camp, Port Townsend Blues Workshop,
and Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. With scores of recordings
to his name, Miller just released a new solo CD "Hey,
There!"
Accordionist Steve Rice is well known in the Northwest
for his coloristic improvisation style, good humor,
and fine musicianship. He has toured and recorded
extensively with Klezmer, Cajun, and Folkloric groups
including "The Mazeltones," "Bochinche,"
and "Shawn's Kugel." He won the Oscar Petersen
Award at Berkeley Conservatory for jazz piano and
tours internationally with The Harry James Orchestra.
Violinist Paul Elliott has toured with Michelle Shocked
and his recording credits include film, television,
radio and CDs, including Scott Nygaard's "No
Hurry" on Rounder Records and his original jazz
recordings with"Catwalk." <back
